Introducing Joseph Amick

Hey, my name’s Joseph (as the title says) and I can’t believe I already missed an assignment for a class!

Firstly, this isn’t about me, but I wanted to say the name Nunez was very familiar and I realized once Professor Lindeman said “he’s also a philosopher” that he was my Phil 102 (or 101, my memory is terrible) professor from last Fall. I think that’s pretty comical, anyway. I hope he’s doing well, he was a spectacular professor.

So, about myself… I was born in Irmo (technically Lexington but I lived in Irmo) and I moved to Chapin when I was 5 after my brother was born. I attended Chapin elementary, middle, and high and then moved to Columbia to attend USC.

I guess I could say I had a really mundane life up to this point… but there have been a few things I can share about that make me unique… sort of.

I often tell people “if you have a question to ask me, don’t make it about the real world, I wouldn’t really understand.” Basically, I am absolutely terrible at any practical skill (driving, cooking, cleaning, working out, etc.). I’m also extremely forgetful and I have absolutely no sense of style and I’m extremely scatterbrained (as you can probably tell by the structure of this entry). However, I pride myself on one thing: imagination. I absolutely love the art of storytelling, and inventing new and creative ways around how to think about abstract things is one of my favorite conversation topics. I also love other arts like playing violin/piano/ukulele or really anything I can get my hands on (which you can argue is practical but whatever), and of course drawing and visual arts.

Speaking of which, philosophy has revealed itself to be one of my biggest interests in college. Researching and learning brings me deeper and deeper into the maze of thought that has always buzzed around in my brain but with no order. Philosophy seems to be a way to make that entropic buzz more calm. It also made me realized that the thoughts that I have are not mine alone and that the greats of history went way further than I did with much more to back up their observations. On that subject, I believe this class will be a way to analyze more modern examples/scenarios that will allow me to see the same maze in my head at, perhaps, a different angle.

That’s pretty much it! I don’t think I should put my entire life story or anything, but that’s just how my brain works, really. Hopefully it will prove useful for this class.
